Healthy Donuts

One of the things my kids miss most about eating gluten (and dairy for Emi) is donuts!  They’ve been requesting them for a long time, so I recently bought a donut pan and develop recipes for healthy donuts.  Here’s what the donut pan looks like:

Believe it or not, it’s actually very simple to make healthy donuts!  I stole some of the batter from my Paleo Sweet Potato Brownies and Morning Glory Muffins a few weeks ago, poured it into the greased donut pan, and baked the donuts at 350 degrees until they were set.  I froze them until we were ready to use them for a special occasion!  I also froze some of the purple frosting I made with the Morning Glory Muffins, then sprinkled them with green.  I’ll give you a recipe for very quick chocolate frosting at the end of this post.

You can use any kind of quick bread recipe for baked donuts, so have fun with it!  These recipes worked very well.  Not only do they taste good, they are gluten free, dairy free, low glycemic, and full of veggies, nuts, and nutrients!  What a great way to teach children (and adults) to enjoy eating healthy foods!  Here are the links for the recipes:

Here’s the recipe for the chocolate frosting…seriously, it takes less than 5 minutes!

  • 1/2 Cup Very Dark Chocolate Chips or Chunks (70% is best)
  • 1/2 Cup Sunbutter (I like this, because it’s sweeter than almond butter)
  • 3 Tbsp Almond Milk

Mix all the ingredients together in a bowl and heat in the microwave for 40 seconds.  Stir until smooth.  Yum!
